So not too much goes on in these chapters. Most of it is just following Christopher on his journey to his mothers. If you just took the text out...it would probably be a pretty boring section to read and wouldn't really interest you at all.
But...Haddon, or Christopher, whoever you want it to be, decides to "enhance" the story. He does this by adding pictures. I looked ahead a little through the next few pages, and we start to see even more pictures. Throughout the book we have had some math problems and pictures of some roads and some more math problems but in this part of the book, the pictures are almost allowing the reader to envision the actual journey he is taking. From the pictures of the maps he makes in his head to the signs he sees in the "underground" as they call it. Though this is not exactly a language choice, it is definitely a style choice made by the author. In my opinion it is a good one. It really brings out the truth of Autism and how many savant autistic kids percieve the world. They're vision is so unlike ours and for an author to capture that and allow the reader, just for 200 or so pages, get a glimpse of the way of life, is truly something to admire and applaude....
Go ahead...you can applaude...he deserves it...
The book is definitely making its way up my list of favorites. His style is so different from other novels and it is amazing how such a simple story can become so enjoyable to the reader.
